Historique :	Cette toile fait partie d'un ensemble de toiles réalisées à la fin des années 1930 pour orner la salle spectacle du sanatorium de Saint-Hilaire-du-Touvet. Le commanditaire était daniel Douady, directeur du centre, au nom du ministère. L'établissement se nommait alors CUC (Centre Universitaire de Cure). Le lieu était alors un foyer intellectuel très actif. 'La Danse' signée du grenoblois Gabriel Fournier est différente des précédentes toiles. Par contraste, elle peut paraître fade. Mais l'artiste, révélé par des expositions accompagnant les récitals d'Erik Satie, a réalisé une oeuvre d'apparence aimable, gracieuse, assurémant décorative. On peut voir aussi dans le personnage en bas à gauche une allusion à l'actrice Marlène Dietrich du film 'L'Ange bleu'.
